So you have the best picture money can buy. You have a huge screen. You have Dolby digital surround sound. What more could you possibly need to make a movie experience better and get you more involved in the action. The answer is, you need a motion simulator that synchronizes with the action on the screen.

As long as cinema has existed people have tried elaborate and ingenious methods to bridge the barrier between the screen and it’s audience. Sound was the first innovation. Since then we have conceived but never quite implemented such bizarre ideas like ‘smellovision’ or have squirted water or blown gusts of air at audiences to add a ‘look and feel’ type quality to movies.

If you have ever been to a theme park you will know that the ultimate effect to add to movies is motion. Popular rides like the space shuttle simulator combine synchronized motion with footage of a space shuttle flight. The sensation is that you are really on board the ship and experiencing all the gut wrenching g forces. It feel like you are really there.

Well this sensation is now possible in the comfort of your own home. Home theater systems generally used bass shakers to create a feeling of movement for the viewer. On low bass notes the sub woofer would shake or rattle to give the impression of being involved in the action. This worked to a limited extent but has moved on since the early home theaters.

There are now devices that pick up on the bass notes and control actuators that can move a seat based on the noise. These types of devices range from simple devices that you can place behind your sofa that will lift or rock the sofa based on the noise to really top end motion simulators that have customized actuators in your favorite recliner, armchair or sofa.

The more sophisticated systems have literally hundreds of different movements. In some cases the movements are unique to a particular movie. The creators of the motion simulators watch the movie and then program in a movement based on the action and the sound. They create new ‘movement control’ software every month for the latest DVD offerings that you can have sent to you or download.

These movements make car chases, plane crashes and other action sequences come to life. It feels like you are a passenger riding in the back seat.

As you can imagine some of this technology can get pretty expensive but if you want the best possible movie experience you want to try a motion simulator at some point.
