Excessive stress can be harmful in several ways. Individuals under stress have an increased risk of suffering from various cardiovascular diseases like cardiac arrest and myocardial infarction. Incidences of diabetes, high blood pressure and other psychological problems have been found to be high in people with excessive stress levels. Stress impairs the ability to judge between right and wrong. It damages the self confidence levels of individuals and also causes a decreased productivity. Improper stress management can be detrimental to a person’s professional as well as personal life. There are several treatment options available for reducing stress. One such useful therapeutic mechanism is self hypnosis.

Self hypnosis is a process where a person hypnotizes himself or herself without the assistance of a hypnotist. It is very easy to learn the process of self hypnosis. The entire duration of the exercise is 5 to 30 minutes but the benefits are immense. All that is required is some free time, a quiet place, comfortable clothing, an open mind and a clear objective.

1. You need to look for a serene place away from distractions. Early morning hours are preferable and more beneficial.

2. Sit in a comfortable and relaxed position. While some people prefer to recline, others simply prefer to use a cozy chair.

3. Controlled breathing is important for effective self hypnosis. You can start taking deep breaths. Rather than raising shoulders, you have to expand the abdomen while inhaling. The entire breathing exercise should be done in coordination with the brain. You have to breathe in with a feeling that you are breathing excess oxygen in ‘calmness’. While exhaling, you can imagine that the entire stress of the day is breathing out. It is important to feel that the entire oxygen is spreading throughout the body and cleansing the system.

4. Depending on the goal, you can develop a positive phrase or statement. For example, if the goal is to become organized, you can have a statement like “I am becoming organized and efficient” rather than “I am becoming less messy”. Usage of negative words can have a dual effect.

5. While breathing, you have to constantly repeat the selected phrase. It is important to concentrate on the sound of the words and visualize the end result so as to get the words registered in the sub-conscious mind.
