Arrogance, Academia And Think Tanks
April 26, 2008 | Leave a Comment
Perhaps you have noticed the arrogance of academia and they proclaim that they know what is best. However what you may not realize is that this arrogance is also very common in Think Tanks. Since I run a think tank, often those who wish to join will ask us if we are a bunch of arrogant prix? Interestingly enough, this does not bother us much, because this is the common perception. Here is the answer that we most often give.
Well I suppose with Brilliance indeed comes at least some Baggage, so I would say there is a touch of arrogance we must deal with around here, that said, it appears self-esteem is a positive human trait if kept in check?
The last person who asked us if our think tank was full of arrogant individuals actually did a fair amount of bragging in his application to join our team of thinkers and so we wrote back:
Your email indicates that you pride yourself on being able to stand on a stronger moral foundation with a better view of system from outside the cave or box? Perhaps there is a touch of “earned ego” in your mirror as well. That is fine. We are all Good, no worries. Our group is fairly small.
You see Arrogance is neither a pre-requisite nor a political impasse here, for every concept needs spokesmen and every spokesman must answer to his own reflection. Indeed, the arrogance issue is a real one and yes some people cannot handle it much, but a Think Tank must understand how the creative genius works and how brilliance often comes with at least a touch of baggage and thus a little arrogance now and again, well that is a little price to pay for the results we render.
