The hardest thing about paying back debt isn’t money. The hardest thing about paying back debt is feeling positive, I’m sure. The problem is that human nature sees our moods dipping and peaking like crazy. Whilst it is easy to feel positive when we’re at the top of our game, it is incredibly hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel when the kids are fighting, the final demand for the gas came in and you are going down with the ‘flu.

Positivity is an enabler for achieving what we need to. Ever noticed that the people who talk the most about being happy or fulfilled have a tendency to have wonderful opportunities just fall into their laps? Doesn’t seem fair, does it? I’m personally convinced that we make our own luck (or lack of it) through our own attitudes.

Which is fine, but we don’t always have the ability to pull out of a black or low mood and turn on our good attitude. I often think that the world would be an easier place to live in if everyone who was told “Snap out of it!” could manage it that easily. Debt impacts very negatively on our lives, and perversely makes it much harder to cultivate the happiness and contentedness that allows us to fight the situation with all our energy. So, how do we fight it? How do we get ourselves into the right mind frame for good things to happen to us?

Well, these things often work for me.

* Laughter. I just went to Feeling Happy and saw the t-shirt quote, “I childproofed the house, but they still got in…” It worked for me :-)

* Doing something nice for someone else. Perverse, I know, but making someone else happy or grateful can do wonders for your self-esteem.

* Driving yourself to achieve something easy (posting a letter, paying a bill etc.) so that at the end of the day you can say, “I achieved something today”. It increases the possibility of feeling better tomorrow.

* Put on some cheerful music and sing along.

* If it is sunny outside, go outside for a walk or just sit down and read.

* Playing bagpipes. OK, I know that I’m probably in a tiny minority here, but playing bagpipes really cheers me up. Of course the problem is that it tends to upset the people around me :-)

Ah well, fingers crossed that tomorrow is a better day!

It has been said that if the first thing you think about in the morning is writing, then you are a writer.

If that is the case, then I’m probably someone who would really like to stay in bed :-) Once I’ve been forcibly wrenched away from my duvet, then I think I qualify as a writer…

I’ve been writing for 25 years: fiction, non-fiction and songs. I’m lucky enough to have been published in both the UK and US and had songs covered by US, UK and Canadian artists.

Current hobbies are performing with several bands and indulging my money-making and thrifty urges at The In-Debt Net. Come visit!
