One of the many reasons women are turning to bariatric surgery for weight loss is the difficulty in becoming pregnant. Too often, the excess fat interferes with the metabolic system and the design makes it difficult, if not impossible.

Recent studies have shown that weight loss induced by bariatric surgery such as gastric bypass or Lap Band often increases the risk of women getting pregnant.

But is post-bariatric surgery pregnancy healthy? Does not the fact that food is very limited it is more difficult for a developing baby to thrive? Well, apparently not.

According to a study published in the November 2008 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association, it appears that pregnancy after bariatric surgery in May actually exercising less risk of certain complications in the mother that those who are obese.
